Sponsorship of Carbon Neutral Events

What is an AbitibiBowater-sponsored carbon neutral event?

As part of our commitment to sustainability and in keeping with our aspiration to become a carbon neutral enterprise, AbitibiBowater is donating carbon credits to select events – trade shows, meetings, conferences and various other initiatives. These credits are used to offset greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated as a result of an event, making it carbon-neutral.

Event GHG emissions primarily include participant travel (airplane, train, car, bus, taxi), freight requirements, hotel stays, meals and overall on-site energy consumption. To maintain objectivity, AbitibiBowater outsources the calculation of an event’s potential GHG emissions to a third-party organization, Planetair. Planetair is a not-for-profit service managed by the Unisféra International Centre, a non-profit Montreal research and consulting organization dedicated to the advancement of sustainable development in Canada and around the world.

Where does AbitibiBowater get carbon credits?

The Company earns carbon credits by reducing GHG emissions through improved energy efficiency measures and decreased use of fossil fuels.

Our carbon credits are registered on the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), the world’s first and North America’s only legally binding GHG emission-reduction program.

AbitibiBowater reports its GHG emissions to the CCX, which conducts third-party audits to confirm the level of emissions reported. Members of the CCX who reduce GHG emissions below their pre-determined reduction targets have surplus allowances, or credits, to place on deposit on the CCX. AbitibiBowater has been a member of the CCX since 2003 and has exceeded its reduction targets every year.

Since 2000, we have significantly reduced our Company-wide GHG emissions by 71% in absolute terms – equal in effect to removing 734,000 automobiles from the road*.
