Dedicated to developing diversity
A diverse workplace makes excellent business sense. By attracting prospective employees from the widest possible range of backgrounds, the Company can select from a similarly wide range of talent. Diversity also helps to retain good people, enabling them to grow personally and make the most of their role in the Company.
These are good things to do, and they are good for Abitibi-Consolidated too. In 2002, the Company has begun to diversify the work environment through four key initiatives.
1. Establishing management participation
An awareness and understanding of the value of diversity should not be limited to just one part of the Company. In fact, many of the most significant gains will be made through management in all divisions. In these ranks, where women are currently under-represented in key positions, managers can have the greatest impact by leading strategies to promote workforce diversity and an inclusive culture.
2. Promoting inclusiveness
We are taking several specific steps to help Company leaders appreciate the importance of diversity in the workplace. These measures include training programs on diversity and gender issues and methods for creating a respectful work environment.
3. Facilitating work/life balance
Balancing the sometimes conflicting demands of our working lives and our personal lives can be a challenge for any employee. When it comes to diversity, this balance is also a major priority for the employer. After investing time and effort in a substantial study that involved more than 20 major companies, Abitibi-Consolidated is drafting new human resources programs and policies to enable the Company to optimize the work-life balance of all employees. The results are expected to set new standards for an employer of choice and a proactive leader in our industry.
4. Attracting and cultivating talent
The real proof of diversity goes well beyond simple statements - it will be found in the way in which people are recruited and promoted. Abitibi-Consolidated is therefore devoted to establishing not just a diverse work environment, but one that is rich in opportunity. Beyond ensuring access to training programs and other means of personal advancement, this environment will foster mutual support through counselling, mentoring and a culture that encourages all employees to make the most of themselves.
