What is Sustainable Forest Management?
Sustainable Forest Management, or SFM, maintains and enhances the long-term health of forest ecosystems while providing ecological, economic, social and cultural opportunities for the benefit of present and future generations. Sustainability of our forests is essential to the economic viability of our mills, our communities and our Company. click to view

Sustainable forest management activities start with a planning process. A public participation process ensures appropriate discussion with different stakeholders, with the goal of protecting forest resources, taking into account their varied use and respect for the productivity of the forest.
Sustainable forest management also includes the overall management of all aspects of forestry as well as assessing and reporting on our activities related to public resources.
To publicly demonstrate its commitment and achievement in Sustainable Forest Management, Abitibi-Consolidated has chosen to develop an environmental management system (EMS) for each of its Canadian woodland operations. This EMS will be certified through a rigorous third-party audit.
