Environmental and Sustainable Forest Management Policy

"Fort Frances Woodlands Management Group is committed to the Prevention of pollution, continuous Improvement to our environmental performance, Compliance to all laws and regulations, and Sustainable forest management in our woodlands " - PICS

The strategy to put our policy into practice is as follows:

    • Meet or exceed relevant legislation and regulations;
    • Conform with applicable requirements of the international standards ISO 14001 and CSA Z809;
    • Ensure operations are consistent with Abitibi-Consolidated's Vision and Values, Environmental Health and Safety Policy and Sustainable Forest Management Policy;
    • Conform to the applicable partnership requirements;
    • Provide opportunities for public participation in the development of Sustainable Forest Management values, objectives, indicators and targets;
    • Provide conditions and safeguards for the health and safety of workers and the public;
    • Provide participation opportunities for Aboriginal peoples, with respect to their rights and interests in Sustainable Forest Management.
    • Respect Aboriginal and Treaty rights;
    • Prevent pollution, using processes, practices, materials or products that avoid, reduce or control pollution;
    • Operations associated with water crossings will adhere to all legal and guideline requirements; if problems are encountered, immediate, decisive and thorough remedial action will be instituted;
    • Avoid insecticide and herbicide use whenever possible. Limit the use of herbicides on the forest to areas where non-chemical alternatives are ineffective in meeting silvicultural objectives, or are prohibitively expensive;
    • Provide a framework for setting and reviewing environmental objectives and targets;
    • Provide a contract structure that ensures appropriate requirements are met or exceeded;
    • Provide employees with training, assistance and supervision to make them aware of their roles and responsibilities including the environmental benefits of improved performance;
    • Manage our forests in a sustainable manner consistent with requirements of our sustainable forest management plan by contributing to:
    1. Conservation of biological diversity;
        2. Maintenance and enhancement of ecosystem conditions and productivity;
        3. Conservation of soil and water resources;
        4. Forest ecosystem contributing to global ecological cycles;
        5. The multiple benefits to society; and
        6. Accepting society's responsibility for sustainable development.
    • Measure and assess our performance;
    • Ensure continual improvement of our Forest Environmental Management System (FEMS) through system and process audits; and
    • Participate in studies, trials, and research activities that advance the understanding of forest science and best management practices, including Sustainable Forest Management.
