A Pillar of Our Success | |
Abitibi-Consolidated is a world leader in recovery and recycling, with operations in North America and the United Kingdom. Recycling is an integral part of the Company's business strategy and a key element of its approach to sustainability. As well as providing an assured, integrated source of fibre, Abitibi-Consolidated's recycling operations enable the Company to reduce its environmental footprint and contribute to a greener urban lifestyle. Three of Abitibi-Consolidated's paper mills utilize 100% recycled fibre and five others use varying percentages. Approximately 1.7 million tonnes of recovered fibre are secured through a combination of community drop-off containers, recycling programs with busineses and commercial offices, partnerships with municipalities, and brokerage purchases.
Abitibi-Consolidated has extended its recycling activities beyond newspapers and magazines to include other papers, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, textiles, glass and steel at a number of locations in North America and the U.K.
The Abitibi Paper Retriever® program promotes recycling by placing drop-off containers at participating schools and non-profit organizations. It serves 21 metropolitan areas in North America as well as selected regions across the U.K.
Being The Full-Circle Recycler® is part of our commitment to being a good global corporate citizen. We produce the newsprint, you read the newspaper, and you recycle it at an Abitibi Paper Retriever® location in your neighbourhood, and we take it back to our mills to turn back into newsprint. |
