Newfoundland Woodlands - Newfoundland and Labrador

Sustainable Forest Management - Forest Certification

As part of our continued commitment to sustainable forest management...

Abitibi-Consolidated Company of Canada is seeking Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certification of our Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) practices within our Defined Forest Area (DFA) on Insular Newfoundland. The Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM) criteria for Sustainable Forest Management shapes the foundation of Newfoundland Woodland's Forest Management Plans and will be used as a guide for our forest certification initiatives.

Your opinion matters

We would like to know how you feel about forest management issues under Newfoundland Woodlands jurisdiction on the island portion of the province. What values are important for the management of this forest? How should sustainability be measured? Your opinion matters and can help shape the future of our forests. Please take time to complete the public survey.

You comments are welcome at any time

Through an established Public Participation process, Newfoundland Woodlands developed and implemented a strategic Sustainable Forest Management Plan in January 2001. The SFM plan was developed using the previous version of the CSA Standard, therefore, some adjustment is necessary to align with the new version. Largely, Newfoundland Woodlands compiled a draft amendment to the SFM Plan & intends to rekindle the Public Participation Process to review and finalize this draft amendment. Comments received during this review period (April 2003 - June 2003) will be considered for this amendment, while comments received after this review period will be considered during other review / revision periods of this SFM Plan or the development of a new SFM Plan.
