Sustainable Forest Management - Forest Certification
Our continued commitment to sustainable forest management
Abitibi-Consolidated Company of Canada, North Shore Forest, has been certified under standard ISO 14001 for all of its woodlands operations since 2002. The process leading toward sustainable forest management certification under standard CAN/CSA Z809-02 was officially initiated in February 2002 with the establishment of a harmonization table made up of organizations and stakeholders the North Shore Defined Forest Area (DFA).
Local environment and sustainable forest management policy (3090 kb)
Standard CAN/CSA Z809-02 certifies that the forest is managed in accordance with sustainable development principles. This Canadian standard requires that organizations conform with the set of criteria adopted by the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCMF), addressing several key aspects of sustainable forest management:
1. Conservation of Biological Diversity;
2. Maintenance and Enhancement of Forest Ecosystem Condition and Productivity;
3. Conservation of Soil and Water Resources;
4. Forest Ecosystem Contributions to Global Ecological Cycles;
5. Multiple Benefits to Society;
6. Accepting Society's Responsibility for Sustainable Development.
Furthermore, in order to allow a larger number of holders of Timber Supply and Forest Management Agreements (TSFMAs) to become involved, Abitibi-Consolidated Company of Canada, North Shore Forest, offered other holders of TSFMAs three distinct participation options.
Sustainable forest management (SFM) plan
The effort to identify and select the Values, Objectives, Indicators and Targets (VOITs) associated with the CSA SFM aspects listed above was initiated in January 2003. The members of the harmonization table were involved in this process. Based on the analysis of the gap between the current situation and the results forecast for each indicator, the SFM plan outlines the strategies selected and the major activities to be undertaken to achieve the objectives established. The plan also contains a description of the monitoring program that will be used to assess the progress of initiatives and the results achieved.

CSA Committee
In collaboration with the Defined Forest Area (DFA) stakeholders, the CSA commitee was formed to gather information and address the social, environmental and economic concerns associated with the area.
Formed democratically, the CSA Commitee includes representatives of interest groups present in the DFA. These representatives are working
on th SFM plan and defining the related Values, Objectives, Indicators and Targest (VOITs). They are also involved in monitoring the
performance of the plan and recommending improvements.
A stakeholder participation process (in french only) supports the efforts of the CSA Committee.
Audit
An audit designed to determine if the environmental management and SFM system meets all the requirements of the CAN/CSA Z809-02 standard was conducted in November 2004. Annually, a certified third-party auditor is required to review our SFM plan to ensure compliance with the various SFM requirements and specifications. The certification must be renewed every three (3) years.

Annual achievements
Annual sustainable forest management (SMF) report
The annual SFM report is intended to be a dynamic document that provides stakeholders with ongoing progress updates with regard to the objectives, indicators and targets included in the SFM plan. Given the diverse range of objectives (i.e. short-, medium- and long-term), it is essential that an annual assessment be carried out to update and effectively monitor progress with regard to each objective. Here is the first report, for the year 2004-2005.

Tools developed to assess the achevement of our objectives
Our geographic information system GÉOFOR is one of the means we use to achieve our objectives and targets. This system, which has been adapted for our use, is a powerful tool for monitoring and ensuring compliance with our objectives and targets.
Sustainable development project partner
Abitibi-Consolidated has signed a lease with and granted an easement for park purposes to a non-profit corporation to provide for the conservation of the Boisé de la Pointe St-Gilles through sustainable development. The Boisé is privately owned Company property.
