Our Performance

ISO 14001- Objective Achieved!

Our objective was to have woodlands, hydro plants, pulp and paper facilities and sawmills across our divisions independently certified to ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) Standard by the end of 2004. Our continued commitment is to have any new facilities implement ISO 14001 within a two-year time frame.

In April 1998, our Bridgewater, U.K. operations were the first of our manufacturing facilities to be certified to ISO 14001. In 2004, six years later, we accomplished our goal of achieving ISO 14001 certification at all operations, when our facility in Alma, Québec was successfully certified.

Sustainable Forest Management Certification - Leader in Forest Certification in Canada!

At the end of 2006, Abitibi-Consolidated met its objectives with respect to sustainable forest management (SFM) certification. Essentially all of the 15.8 million hectares of woodlands entrusted to the Company's stewardship throughout North America have been certified to SFM recognized standards. This achievement makes Abitibi-Consolidated the industry leader in Canada in terms of forest certification and has facilitated a shift of focus to chain-of-custody, where necessary.

We remain committed to maintaining SFM certification in all forests we manage and are now focusing on chain-of-custody which is the next level of certification.

For a complete review of our Woodlands regions' performance, please refer to our Forest Certification section under Forest.

Chain of Custody - The next level of certification!

Chain of custody certification is a third-party confirmation that the Company has the systems and controls necessary to track the source of certified fibre in its products.

We have achieved chain of custody certification for fibre sourcing at ourAlma, Fort Frances, Iroquois Falls, Kénogami and Laurentide paper mills, demonstrating leadership in environmental responsibility and fibre sourcing. We are in the process of implementing a chain of custody at Beaupré in 2007.

EcoLogo Program - Going for Green Energy!
Our Mackenzie paper mill in British Columbia and our Fort Frances paper mill in Ontario both reached important environmental benchmarks in 2006 when they became "Green Energy" certified, as designated by the EcoLogo.
